Title:
Putting All the Pieces Together: DNA and Irish Online Resources
Description:
When you find a new DNA match there might be a small tree, or several surnames or locations,
or there might be no information at all. One way to gain more information is to cluster the DNA
matches. Likely at least one of the matches in the cluster will have information that you can use
to start building out a tree. Search public trees on Ancestry and/or MyHeritage for more
members of the family. Make your new tree private and unsearchable in case there is incorrect
information in it. Then use available records to verify the people in the tree. Census records are
a great place to start as they list all the occupants of the house and their ages. That gives a hint
at their birth year, and then you can search for birth records. Depending on the location birth
records often give both parents’ names including the mother’s maiden name. Working
backwards you can search for the parent’s marriage record. This type of analysis should work
for many locations. My research following this procedure using Irish records will be explained in
this presentation.
